Sunday in The Square: A Mini-Festival of Storytelling, Music, and More
What better way to wind down the summer than with a full day of connecting (safely) with your friends, neighbors, and fellow Chicagoans. We are pleased to present the opportunity to come together in the controlled outdoor environment of North Center's spacious new square, to celebrate our shared humanity through art. We'd love for you to join us.

This mini-festival will run from 11:00 AM - 8:00PM, and will feature award-winning storytellers, fantastic local musicians, and much more. Discounted tickets now available for those who cannot attend for the full day.

Within a week of the performance, you will receive an email with full details.

We will be abiding by all current local and national safety guidelines.

1) Limited tickets will be sold to ensure that there will be some spacing between parties (just to keep it comfortable for all). You will be required to bring your own chair, blanket, or legs from which to view the performances.

2) As of now, masks will not be required if you are vaccinated. All of the science, worldwide, points to outdoor transmission being basically non-existent, with the possible exception of densely packed crowds spending many hours together. We expect you to be a decent person and mask up if you are not yet vaccinated.

3) The performers will be at least 15-20 feet away from the front row, up on a raised stage. Mic and stands will be sanitized fully between performers.

Schedule

11:00 AM  - 12:00 PM
OPEN MIC

If you have a story, poem, song, or dance inside of you, we'd love for you to let it out on our festival stage. There's no pressure, judgment, or scoring, just enthusiasm for you choosing to express yourself. Slots will be 7 minutes long, strictly enforced. We'd request no profanity or gratuitous material, as this is an open, public area. You can sign up by the side of the stage before this session, and we will draw names for participants. We hope to get 6-7 people a spot in the showcase.

12:00 - 1:00 PM
GILEAD
(50 minute storytelling set)

Gilead Chicago is a queer storytelling bar church. First-person storytelling is our main spiritual practice, that and parties which range from intimate to raucous depending on the occasion and run online or in-person depending on pandemic status. Find us hereherehere, and, until we return to a proper beer-based
setting here (on the lawn, in-person, Sundays at 5pm).

1:00 - 2:00 PM
LINDA SOL
(50 minute hip hop/poetry set)

From Chicago's West side to Stanford, from poet to emcee, Linda Sol (Melinda Hernandez) is a multifaceted artist whose life is a puzzle time continues to solve. From a young age, she took interest in instruments and poetry through her participation in Kuumba Lynx, an after school matters program using the arts to build community and love. Her work with the pen has led her to the Indy and Team final stage in Louder than a Bomb 2017 as well as the final stage in CUPSI 2018 and 2019. Her poems have since been featured on Button Poetry and Write About Now as well as featured in "The End of Chiraq: a Literary Mixtape" and "The Breakbeat Poets Volume 4: LatiNEXT". A passion for lyricism and an ear for music eventually birthed an emcee. A handful of singles and an EP later, Sol has had the pleasure of opening for artists such as 2 Chainz, Ella Mai, Shangela, Dreezy, A.Chal, Samaria, and Mereba as well as performing for Lollapalooza 2020. She is currently working on developing her craft and shooting more music videos. Feel free to check out her music on Soundcloud or Spotify, and stop by her youtube to see her first couple of visuals (@_lindasol)

2:00 - 3:00 PM
MEGAN WELLS
(50 minute storytelling set)

Megan Wells is a bridge teller – one foot in the new movement of personal telling and the other foot in the traditional model.  She has been a full-time professional touring storyteller for nearly 30 years.  What that really means is Megan knows a lot of folk and fairy stories, epic stories, world myth and historical stories and she tells them anywhere, everywhere and a lot.  Credits include Guest Artist for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Artistic Director of the Ray Bradbury Storytelling Festival, yearly teller with the Chicago Public Library as well as libraries, schools, museums, book clubs, major storytelling festivals and theaters.  Recently named an Oracle by the National Storytelling Network, Megan was inducted into America’s Circle of Excellence in Storytelling.  On the other foot, Megan is a passionate supporter of this exciting new movement of personal narrative and thrives on its intimacy, heart and edge.  I guess you could say she’s some kind of story fanatic.  There is a theater passion too, and a bio for that, but you can see that at www.meganwells.com.

3:00 - 4:00 PM
SUE FINK
(50 minute music set)

Chicago-based singer-songwriter Sue Fink has been enchanting audiences since 2001 with her whimsical perspective on the world. She is a witty social commentator and perceptive observer of the human condition. Her genre, which she calls “urban campfire cabaret,” is folk with a hint of jazz, a large dollop of humor, and a drop of sadness for good measure.  Her songs are played on folk radio stations nationwide, and her “Alternate Universe” song was used in an episode of This American Life.  She curated the Virtual Dream Café performance series during the pandemic, and most recently she recorded her two cicada-related songs on a specially designed cicada-shaped flash drive, aka the “Cicada Suite.”

4:00 - 5:00 PM
OPEN MIC

If you have a story, poem, song, or dance inside of you, we'd love for you to let it out on our festival stage. 5:00 - 6:00 PM
BETH HORNER
(50 minute storytelling set)

A National Storytelling Network Circle of Excellence Oracle Award recipient, Beth Horner is a 40-year nationally touring spoken word artist.  Sought after as both a storytelling performance and teaching artist, Beth has performed multiple times at the National Storytelling Festival, for NASA, on Live From National Geographic, for the International Art of Storytelling Festival, the Starlight Educational Foundation of Taiwan and for Lyrics & Lore: A Weekend with Songwriters & Storytellers at Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort. She served as narrative consultant for NASA/Johnson Space Center’s Story Mining project for which she collected the stories of the scientists behind the Apollo Space Missions.

6:00 - 7:00 PM
4SPIEL
(50 minute music set)

4Spiel is a consortium of Chicago area musicians committed to stretching the boundaries and expectations of chamber music. With a string quartet at its core, the group reinterprets classic works along with giving voice to contemporary and new work across all genres. 4Spiel is Margaret Daley (cello), Carmen Llop Kassinger (violin),  Lisa Fako (violin), and Monica Reilly (viola).

7:00 - 8:00 PM
STORIES IN THE SQUARE
(50 minute storytelling set)

Join us as some of Chicago's finest tellers of personal narratives take to the stage to share some memorable stories. This is a reprise of our showcase that has sold out in the square 8 times over the last year, featuring an all new cast including Scott Whitehair, Ali Siddiqui, Betsey Manzoni, Louis Greenwald, and Lupe Nunez.
